Hamilton County’s Great Parks is bringing back its popular Winter Hike Series this January, offering hikers of all ages and skill levels the chance to hit the trails and learn a little bit about nature.
The Winter Hike Series kicks off Saturday, Jan. 10 at Winton Woods, with hikes on the following four Saturdays at different Great Parks locations:
- Jan. 17: Sharon Woods
- Jan. 24: Woodland Mound
- Jan. 31: Shawnee Lookout
- Feb. 7: Miami Whitewater Forest
All hikes start at 10 a.m. and range from 4 to 5.5 miles. There will be accessible hikes on multi-use trails at Winton Woods and Miami Whitewater Forest.
Every hike will explore the natural history and unique features of the park, but there are also different hiking groups that offer different experiences. Families with children ages 5 and up can join the Family Hike and play games as they explore nature. You can also opt to be in the group for a fast-paced, moderate or leisurely hike. There are also different themed hikes, like birding; educational hikes where you can learn about lakes, mushrooms or trees; and even a Pokémon day where you can play Pokémon GO as you hike.
At the end of each hike, participants will get to warm up with a bowl of soup, a cookie and the chance to connect with other hikers. Hikers will also receive a button with room for stickers to commemorate each hike they complete.
You can register for the Winter Hike Series at greatparks.org. You must register for each hike to participate. Each hike is $10 per person, and you need a valid Motor Vehicle Permit to enter each park.
